Lake Vostok

... is the largest of almost 400 lakes that are known to exist beneath the glaciers of Antarctica. It's 250 km (160 miles) long, and 50 km (30 miles) wide at its widest point.

It's located beneath the Russian research station of the same name, which in turn was named after the Russian naval ship in which Fabian (Faddey) von Bellingshausen circumnavigated the globe in the early 19th century, and arguably discovered Antarctica. Vostok simply means 'East'.

The existence of a freshwater lake underneath Vostok Station was first suggested around 1960, and confirmed in 1993.
